Building muscle and what it will do for you…and it will do A LOT!!
The number one thing I hear when a new woman comes to the gym to try it out is, “I’m afraid to lift weights because I don’t want to get bulky” or “I’m just trying to tone up”. There is so much misunderstanding in each of those statements!!! But this post is not just for women. It is for anyone who does not truly understand the importance of having lean muscle on their frame and what it will do for them.
Muscle burns fat: plain and simple. You don’t just “bulk” or “tone” up. In order to “tone”, you need to first build muscle to give you that look in the first place. If you’re going to “bulk up” you need to eat a ton of food and train a very specific way. These things just don’t happen like clockwork. When you add muscle to your frame, your body must work very hard to maintain that muscle, which means you burn a lot more calories each day (think elevated metabolism). This is what people are referring to when they mention “toning up”. If you lose a bunch of weight and have no muscle, all you are is skinny fat – it’s not a good look!!
Muscle is important for aging: When you hit 30, your muscle mass slowly decreases as the years go by – unless you do something about it. The less you use your body, the more harm you are doing yourself in the long run. You see that 80yr old who struggles to get up out of their chair? That is probably because they never did any type of strength training or activity to help prevent that. Muscle helps protect your bones/joints so if you are constantly using them the right way and staying active, there’s no reason why
you won’t be that 80yr old jogging down the street with a dumbbell in each hand.
Muscle looks good: This is not the most important reason of all, but who doesn’t want to look good? If you can add some lean
muscle mass to your frame, you are probably going to burn off some fat and just look and feel a lot better. Your friends
will probably all be jealous
and want to know what “cleanse” (that’s a whole ‘nother post for a another day) you did to look like that.
In summation, you (and EVERYONE) should want to build a little bit of muscle. It is great for your body and will do so much in making you look and feel great! When you’re at the gym challenge yourself a little bit. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Pair that with the right foods and you are all set.
